From 23-31 July, IUSD Lab Cairo together with Habitat Unit, TU Berlin conducted a two-week intensive workshop on informal areas in Tunis, in cooperation with Tunisian universities of L’ENAU and L’ESAD. The main goal of this workshop was to learn from the Tunisian experience in dealing with informal urbanism, from the national to the local level including exploring how the state manages the processes of institutionalization within the framework of the transformation process. In addition, the researchers examined the mechanisms that control the relation between different state entities dealing with issues such as public housing and the existing districts’ upgrading. This was accompanied by an attempt to investigate and try to assess different urban development local initiatives and upgrading projects initiated by different stakeholders (e.g. civil society organizations, international cooperation and government).
