On the 26th of April 2017, the MSc Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design at Ain Shams University, master program organized a workshop about “Design for age-friendly city” as part of the module, Integrated Research and Design, IRD. For the first time, the master program opened the call for externals to join. The workshop was diversity of different experiences vary from undergraduates, fresh graduates, master students and PhD candidates. The workshop aims to shed a light on the impact of place making in informal areas and marginalized communities around the city of Cairo as a tool to enhance the quality of livening especially for children & women. The workshop is to provide participants with the latest best practices and approaches for creative place-making, including neighborhood revitalization, public and green space use, and streets for more friendly spaces for children and women.

The workshop was prepared and moderated by architect & Urban researcher Tayseer Khairy, lecturer at IUSD who gave the participants an introduction to the module of IRD, including a background of the focus area of research, Arab Rashed as one of the unplanned areas in Helwan.

Master Students of IUSD introduced two sites of which they developed criteria of assessment during their research to be the focal areas for the participants to develop scenarios of development.

The IUSD was delighted to host guest speakers who had a previous experience in the field of design for children and who had made research on safe cities for women and children. Prof.Dr. Heba Safy ElDeen, MSc. Arch. Sarah ElHussieny, MSc. Arch Reeeham Mourad.

Throughout the workshop, the Participants were given some theoretical as well as professional shared experience from the guest speakers. Later on, the participants were divided into two groups to start working closely on the two sites with the master students of IUSD.

The group of participants; was highly enthusiastic and cooperative, showed a lot of passion for sharing innovative ideas.
